La Colle is near to the town of Forcalquier, as you can see from the map below we are just on the edge of the Luberon and the Vaucluse. Peter Mayle wrote his famous book "A year in Provence" in a small village call Ménerbes which is just next to Apt and is about 30 mins. from Forcalquier.

The Luberon and the Vaucluse are far better known throughout the world as a result of writers like Peter Mayle and the area is well inhabited by Artists, Actors and Actresses, Politicians and the like who also helped to publicise the area.

The 04 which is the short term for Alpes de haute Provence received it's own group of Artists and cultural talent as far back as the late 60's mainly as a rebuttal to the commercialisation of the coast as "Provence" extends from the coast up and to the edge of the Alps.

The 04 started to be "opened up" to visitors with the construction of the autoroute the A51 in the 1980's, which is slightly off the map to the right. As a result visitors came up from the coast where there are the 2 principal international airports (Nice & the nearest being Marseille ), down from Switzerland or Paris ( Northern Europe ) via Grenoble, or continued to use the more traditional route via Lyon to Avigon and then inland East.

All visitors to La Colle receive as part of their confirmation 2 detailed local maps to aid in finding us and getting around.
